1 kB = 1,000 B

Show the working
  1. 1 kB = 1000 B
  2. 1 × 1000 = 1000 B

How to convert kilobytes to bytes

1 kB = 1,000 B, so multiply by 1,000 to go from kilobytes to bytes. Going the other way, 1 B = 0.001 kB.

B = kB × 1,000
kB = B × 0.001

Worked example:

1 kB = 1000 B
5 × 1000 = 5000 B

About the units

Kilobytes (kB)
Kilobytes, a metric unit. Decimal (SI) kilobyte = 1000^1 bytes. Many operating systems label the binary kibibyte (KiB) as 'kB'. Definition: NIST: Prefixes for binary multiples (IEC 80000-13).
Bytes (B)
Bytes, a specialised unit. Definition: NIST: Prefixes for binary multiples (IEC 80000-13).
