Area Converter
Convert areas between square feet, square meters, acres, hectares, square miles and other metric and US units, exactly, with the value in every unit.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter an area, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.
Show the working
- 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²
- 1 × 0.09290304 = 0.09290304 m²
How to use it
Type an area, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.
The answer is worked out exactly and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the conversion factor that was used. Because every unit here is defined exactly, converting there and back always returns your original number.
Why area factors are squares
An area unit is a length unit multiplied by itself, so its conversion factor is the length factor squared. A foot is 0.3048 metres, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square metres. Forgetting to square the factor is the most common area conversion mistake: 10 square feet is about 0.93 square metres, not 3.05.
1 ft² = 0.3048² m² = 0.09290304 m² 1 yd² = 9 ft² 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² 1 mi² = 640 acres
Hectares, ares and acres
Land is usually measured in acres in the United States and in hectares almost everywhere else. A hectare is a square 100 metres on each side (10,000 m²), and an are is a square 10 metres on each side (100 m²). One hectare is about 2.47 acres, and one acre is about 0.405 hectares.
Questions
How many square feet are in a square meter?
