Electric Current Converter

Convert electric current between amperes, milliamperes, microamperes, kiloamperes and the CGS abampere (biot) and statampere.

Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.

Enter an electric current, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.

About valueA number, fraction (3/8), mixed number (1 1/2), scientific notation (2.5e6) or a simple sum such as 2*3.
About toThe unit you want the answer in. Swap exchanges the two units.

How to use it

Type an electric current, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.

The answer is worked out with exact fractions and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the factor that was used.

Key definitions

1 A = 1 C/s = 1,000 mA = 1,000,000 µA
1 abampere (biot) = 10 A

The ampere

One ampere is one coulomb of charge passing a point each second. Since 2019 it has been defined by fixing the elementary charge, so the ampere and its prefixed units are exact.

Questions

How many milliamps are in an amp?

1,000.

What is a biot?

The CGS electromagnetic unit of current, also called the abampere; it equals 10 amperes.

Formulas

result = (value × f(from) + o(from) − o(to)) ÷ f(to)
