Torque Converter
Convert torque between newton-meters, foot-pounds and inch-pounds.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter a torque, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.
Show the working
- 1 lbf·ft = 1.35581794833 N·m
- 100 × 1.35581794833 = 135.581794833 N·m
How to use it
Type a torque, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.
The answer is worked out with exact fractions and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the factor that was used.
Key definitions
1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in ≈ 1.355818 N·m 1 N·m ≈ 0.737562 lbf·ft
Torque wrenches
Wheel nuts and engine bolts are tightened to a torque given in newton-meters or foot-pounds. 100 lbf·ft is about 135.6 N·m. Small fasteners are often specified in inch-pounds; divide by 12 for foot-pounds.
Questions
How many newton-meters is 100 foot-pounds?
About 135.58 N·m.
How do I convert inch-pounds to foot-pounds?
Divide by 12.
Formulas
result = (value × f(from) + o(from) − o(to)) ÷ f(to)
