Volume Converter
Convert volumes between gallons, liters, cups, fluid ounces, cubic feet, cubic meters and more, US and imperial, exactly, with the value in every unit.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter a volume, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.
Show the working
- 1 gal = 3.785411784 L
- 1 × 3.785411784 = 3.785411784 L
How to use it
Type a volume, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.
The answer is worked out exactly and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the conversion factor that was used. US and imperial units are listed separately because they differ.
US and imperial measures are different
A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 litres), while an imperial gallon, still used in the UK for some purposes, is exactly 4.54609 litres, about 20% larger. Pints, quarts and fluid ounces differ too: a US fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL and an imperial fluid ounce about 28.41 mL. Pick the system your recipe, label or specification uses.
1 US gal = 231 in³ = 3.785411784 L 1 US gal = 4 qt = 8 pt = 16 cups = 128 fl oz 1 imperial gal = 4.54609 L = 160 imperial fl oz 1 ft³ = 1,728 in³ ≈ 7.48052 US gal 1 L = 1,000 mL = 1,000 cm³
Tablespoons, teaspoons and drops
US tablespoons and teaspoons are exact fractions of the US fluid ounce: 1 fl oz = 2 tablespoons = 6 teaspoons. The imperial tablespoon and teaspoon listed here are the traditional British measures (about 17.76 mL and 5.92 mL); modern UK and Australian recipes use metric spoons instead, which the cooking conversion calculator covers.
The drop is a convention of 20 drops per millilitre. Real drops vary with the liquid and the dropper, so treat drop conversions as rough guides, never as medical doses.
Questions
How many liters are in a gallon?
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres.
How many cups are in a gallon?
16 US cups. A US gallon is 4 quarts, each quart 2 pints, each pint 2 cups.
Is a cubic centimeter the same as a milliliter?
Yes. One cubic centimetre is exactly one millilitre, and 1,000 of them make a litre.
