Data Storage Converter
Convert data sizes between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes, in both decimal (1,000) and binary (1,024) units.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter an amount of data, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.
Show the working
- 1 GB = 1000 MB
- 1 × 1000 = 1000 MB
How to use it
Type an amount of data, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.
The answer is worked out with exact fractions and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the factor that was used.
Key definitions
1 byte = 8 bits; 1 nibble = 4 bits 1 kB = 1,000 B; 1 MB = 1,000 kB; 1 GB = 1,000 MB 1 KiB = 1,024 B; 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB; 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
Why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive makers use decimal units: a terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Many operating systems count in binary units, where a 'gigabyte' is really 1,073,741,824 bytes (a gibibyte), and so report the same drive as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing; the two numbers use different units.
This converter keeps the two apart: kilobyte, megabyte and gigabyte are the decimal units, and kibibyte, mebibyte and gibibyte are the binary ones.
Questions
How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?
1,000 in decimal units. In binary units, a gibibyte is 1,024 mebibytes.
Is a kilobyte 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
By the international standard, 1,000. The 1,024-byte unit is properly a kibibyte (KiB), although some software still labels it KB.
Formulas
result = (value × f(from) + o(from) − o(to)) ÷ f(to)

Limitations
- Only the units listed are supported here; other data-storage units arrive with later M4 slices.
