Electrical Resistance Converter
Convert electrical resistance between ohms, kilohms, megohms, milliohms and CGS units.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter a resistance, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.
Show the working
- 1 kΩ = 1000 Ω
- 4.7 × 1000 = 4700 Ω
How to use it
Type a resistance, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.
The answer is worked out with exact fractions and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the factor that was used.
Key definitions
1 kΩ = 1,000 Ω 1 MΩ = 1,000 kΩ = 1,000,000 Ω
Reading resistor values
Resistors are marked in ohms with prefixes: 4k7 means 4.7 kΩ (4,700 Ω) and 1M means 1 megohm. For voltage, current and power from a resistance, use the Ohm's law calculator.
Questions
How many ohms are in a kilohm?
1,000.
What does 4k7 mean on a resistor?
4.7 kilohms, or 4,700 ohms: the letter stands in for the decimal point.
Formulas
result = (value × f(from) + o(from) − o(to)) ÷ f(to)

Limitations
- Only the units listed are supported here; other electrical-resistance units arrive with later M4 slices.
