Length Converter
Convert between metric, imperial and US customary lengths, with tape-measure input like 5' 7 3/8" and results in feet, inches and fractions.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Convert a value
Convert a length from one unit to another. For inches, feet and yards you also get feet and inches with a tape-measure fraction.
Show the working
- 1 ft = 12 in
- 5.5 × 12 = 66 in
Feet and inches to another unit
Enter feet and inches, or type a full measurement such as 5' 7 3/8" in the feet box, and convert it.
Show the working
- 5' 7 3/8" = 67.375 in
- 67.375 in = 1.711325 m
Any unit to feet, inches and fraction
Turn any length into feet and inches, rounded to the inch fraction you choose.
Show the working
- 1.7 m = 66.9291338583 in
- Rounded to the nearest 1/64 inch: 5' 6 59/64"
How to use the length converter
Type a length, pick the unit it is in and the unit you want, and press Calculate. You can type fractions (3/8), mixed numbers (1 3/8) and simple sums such as 2*3 or 10 + 1/2. The result also lists the same length in every other unit.
To convert a tape-measure reading, use Feet and inches to another unit: type 5' 7 3/8" into the feet box, or put 5 in feet and 7 3/8 in inches. To go the other way, use Any length to feet and inches and choose how finely to round, from 1/2 inch down to 1/64 inch.
Exact conversion factors
Since 1959 the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres, so every imperial and US customary length has an exact metric equivalent. The converter uses these exact definitions and does the arithmetic with fractions, so results are only rounded when they are displayed.
1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 foot = 12 in = 30.48 cm 1 yard = 3 ft = 0.9144 m 1 mile = 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m
Reading feet, inches and fractions
When a length is shown as feet and inches, the inches are rounded to the nearest fraction you choose. For example, 1.7 metres is 66.929 inches; to the nearest 1/64 inch that is 5' 6 59/64". The result is marked approximate when rounding changed the value, and the rounding difference is shown so you can decide whether a finer fraction is needed.
What is a US survey foot?
The US survey foot (1200/3937 metre) is slightly longer than the international foot, by about 2 parts per million. It was used for land surveys in the United States until the end of 2022, when it was retired in favour of the international foot. It is included for older survey documents and is marked with a warning.
Questions
How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54 centimetres, because the inch is defined as 25.4 millimetres.
How do I convert metres to feet and inches?
Divide by 0.0254 to get inches, then take whole feet (12 inches each) and round the remaining inches to a fraction. This converter does it in one step with the Any length to feet and inches calculator.
Why does 1 kilometre show as 0.621371192237 miles?
A mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres, so a kilometre is 1000 ÷ 1609.344 miles. That division never ends, so the display is rounded to 12 significant digits.

Limitations
- Only the length units listed are supported here; survey-based units (rod, chain, furlong, league, survey mile), nautical mile, astronomical unit, parsec, typographic points and other length units belong to the M4 length family.
- The US survey foot is provided only for legacy data; NIST deprecated it on 1 January 2023.
- Light-year uses the IAU Julian-year value; older tables with 9.46066e15 m differ at the sixth significant digit.
- Feet-inches display is a rounded presentation; the exact value remains available as a decimal.
