Data Transfer Rate Converter

Convert internet and network speeds between bits and bytes per second: kbps, Mbps, Gbps, kB/s, MB/s and more.

Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.

Enter a data rate, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.

About valueA number, fraction (3/8), mixed number (1 1/2), scientific notation (2.5e6) or a simple sum such as 2*3.
About toThe unit you want the answer in. Swap exchanges the two units.

  2. 100 × 0.125 = 12.5 MB/s

How to use it

Type a data rate, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, then press Calculate. You can type decimals, fractions such as 3/8, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, very large or small numbers such as 2.5e6, and simple sums such as 2*3. Swap exchanges the two units.

The answer is worked out with exact fractions and only rounded for display, to 12 significant figures. Below it you get the same value in every other unit on the list, and Show the working gives the factor that was used.

Key definitions

1 byte = 8 bits
1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps = 1,000,000 bit/s
1 MB/s = 8 Mbps

Bits or bytes?

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps, lower-case b), while downloads usually show megabytes per second (MB/s, capital B). A byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB/s, before any overhead.

Questions

How fast is 100 Mbps in MB/s?

12.5 MB/s at most: divide by 8, because a byte is 8 bits.

Is 1 Gbps 1,000 or 1,024 Mbps?

1,000. Network speeds always use decimal prefixes.

Formulas

result = (value × f(from) + o(from) − o(to)) ÷ f(to)
