Bytes to Kilobytes Converter

Convert bytes (B) to kilobytes (kB), with the formula, a conversion table and exact factors.

Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.

Enter an amount of data, choose its unit and the unit you want. The answer is exact until it is shown, and the same value appears in every other unit.

About valueA number, fraction (3/8), mixed number (1 1/2), scientific notation (2.5e6) or a simple sum such as 2*3.
About toThe unit you want the answer in. Swap exchanges the two units.

1 B = 0.001 kB

Show the working
  1. 1 B = 0.001 kB
  2. 1 × 0.001 = 0.001 kB

How to convert bytes to kilobytes

1 B = 0.001 kB, so multiply by 0.001 to go from bytes to kilobytes. Going the other way, 1 kB = 1,000 B.

kB = B × 0.001
B = kB × 1,000

Worked example:

1 B = 0.001 kB
5 × 0.001 = 0.005 kB

About the units

Bytes (B)
Bytes, a specialised unit. Definition: NIST: Prefixes for binary multiples (IEC 80000-13).
Kilobytes (kB)
Kilobytes, a metric unit. Decimal (SI) kilobyte = 1000^1 bytes. Many operating systems label the binary kibibyte (KiB) as 'kB'. Definition: NIST: Prefixes for binary multiples (IEC 80000-13).
