Statistics Calculator

Get every common statistic for a list of numbers at once: mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, variance, quartiles, IQR, MAD, coefficient of variation, standard error and geometric mean.

Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.

Enter your numbers to see all the common statistics together.

About numbersValues separated by commas, spaces or new lines, for example 10, 2, 38, 23.
About the numbers areChoose sample when the numbers are a sample of a larger group; the variance then divides by n − 1.
About quartile methodTextbooks usually take the median of each half; spreadsheets interpolate. The two can differ slightly.

8 values, mean 22.25, median 23. Sorted: 2, 10, 21, 23, 23, 23, 38, 38.

Show the working
  1. Sum = 178
  2. Mean = 178 ÷ 8 = 22.25
  3. Sorted: 2, 10, 21, 23, 23, 23, 38, 38
  4. Median = 23 (the average of the two middle values)

How to use it

Enter your numbers to see all the common statistics together.

Paste or type the numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Results are worked out exactly and shown to 12 significant figures; Show the working lists each step.

Key facts

mean = Σx ÷ n
σ² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ N;  s² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)
IQR = Q3 − Q1

Population or sample?

Use population when the numbers are the whole group you care about (every student in one class). Use sample when they are a sample from a larger group (100 people surveyed about a city); dividing by n − 1 corrects the tendency of a sample to understate the spread.

Questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean adds everything and divides by the count; the median is the middle value once sorted. A few very large values pull the mean up but barely move the median.

Which standard deviation should I use?

Sample, when the numbers are a sample of a larger group; population, when they are the whole group.

Formulas

mean = Σx ÷ n
σ² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ N;  s² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)
IQR = Q3 − Q1

Limitations

  • Up to 5,000 values. Values are separated by commas, spaces or new lines, so write 1250 rather than 1,250.
