Mean, Median, Mode, Range Calculator
Find the mean, median, mode and range of a list of numbers, with the sorted data and steps.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Enter numbers to find their mean, median, mode and range.
Show the working
- Sum = 178
- Mean = 178 ÷ 8 = 22.25
- Sorted: 2, 10, 21, 23, 23, 23, 38, 38
- Median = 23 (the average of the two middle values)
How to use it
Enter numbers to find their mean, median, mode and range.
Paste or type the numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Results are worked out exactly and shown to 12 significant figures; Show the working lists each step.
Key facts
mean = Σx ÷ n; median = middle value; mode = most frequent; range = max − min
When there is no mode
If every value appears the same number of times there is no mode. If two or more values tie for the most appearances, each of them is a mode (the data is bimodal or multimodal).
Questions
What if there are two modes?
Both are modes; the data is bimodal.
What is the median of an even number of values?
The average of the two middle values.
Formulas
mean = Σx ÷ n; median = middle value; mode = most frequent; range = max − min

Limitations
- Up to 5,000 values. Values are separated by commas, spaces or new lines, so write 1250 rather than 1,250.
