Grades can be letters (A+ to F, P or NP for pass/no pass) or percentages (0 to 100). Show the working gives the formula with your numbers.
Key facts
weighted points = letter points + 0.5 (honors) or + 1 (AP, IB, college)
Grade scales
Letters are worth 4 points for A, 3 for B, 2 for C, 1 for D and 0 for F. Plus and minus move a grade by 0.3 on the one-decimal scale (A− = 3.7) or by a third on the thirds scale (A− = 3.67); pick the one your school uses.
Pass/no-pass courses are left out of the GPA, as most schools do; their credits are listed separately.
Weighted and unweighted
An unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0 (4.3 with A+); a weighted one can go above because harder courses earn extra points. Colleges often recalculate GPAs their own way.

Questions
Why is my weighted GPA above 4?
Honors and AP grades carry extra points, so straight A's in them average more than 4.
Does an F get the bonus?
No; a failed course is 0 points whatever its level.
Formulas

Limitations
- Letter-grade points follow the common US 4.0 scale; schools differ, so check your own school's table.
- Percentage bands for letters are the common 97/93/90 … 60 cut-offs.
- Weighted GPAs add 0.5 for honors and 1 for AP, IB and college courses; some schools use other bonuses.
