Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS)
Solve an expression step by step in PEMDAS order: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
Change the values and press Calculate to work out your own figures.
Type an expression; each step shows the next operation in PEMDAS order.
Show the working
- Read as: 22 + 6 × ((14 − 6) ÷ 4 × (18 − 4^2))
- 1. subtract: 22 + 6 × (8 ÷ 4 × (18 − 4^2))
- 2. exponent: 22 + 6 × (8 ÷ 4 × (18 − 16))
- 3. subtract: 22 + 6 × (8 ÷ 4 × 2)
- 4. divide: 22 + 6 × (2 × 2)
- 5. multiply: 22 + 6 × 4
- 6. multiply: 22 + 24
- 7. add: 46
How to use it
Type an expression; each step shows the next operation in PEMDAS order.
Number boxes accept whole numbers, decimals, fractions (3/4), powers (2^10), roots (sqrt(2)) and the constants pi and e. Show the working lists the steps.
Key facts
Parentheses → exponents → × and ÷ left to right → + and − left to right
Why 8 ÷ 4(2) is 4
Multiplication and division share a level and are done left to right: 8 ÷ 4 = 2, then 2 × 2 = 4. Some textbooks treat implied multiplication as binding tighter; write parentheses to be unambiguous.
